ADOPTABLE DOGS |
|
|
Before
you adopt...take a moment to think over these
questions.
Second Chance dogs are currently residing in our East Brookfield
shelter or in foster homes in South Central Massachusetts. For
information on our policies and fees, visit the policies
page. If you are interested in adopting one of our wonderful
dogs, please submit an adoption application.
Please note that our adoption process is run mostly by our very hard working dedicated volunteers. All adoption applications are processed as quickly as possible. While most times it only takes a few days, during busy times it make take as long as a week to process the application. Also, we do occasionally get multiple applications on the same dog. When this happens, we do schedule "meet and greets" with the applicants to ensure the best possible match. Our love and dedication is to find the best possible home for our dogs. It's not just about placing the dog as quickly as possible but ensuring that the dog, and the new loving family, have a lifelong happy match. So, please be patient in this process and feel free to contact us with any questions. We want you to have a wonderful new best friend and we will spend the time with the dog, and you to ensure this happy match. Please see our Happy Endings section to see how this wonderful process has made so many lifelong happy endings.

Maddie - Dog of the Week!
Maddie is an energetic, loving 7 yr. old, female, Black Lab mix, which outwardly would seem to be a healthy and happy girl. She has shown all of us at Second Chance lots of love and desire to share her time with humans and the other dogs. However, someone did not see the love in her heart and abandoned her. She was brought to us after her 10 days in the pound with no one coming to claim her. We are just so happy to have her as one of our temporary residents!!! She has quickly become one of the very loved animals in our care.
As all of our incoming animals do, Maddie immediately was examined by our Vet team, where it was discovered that she is Heart Worm positive, a disease that is brought to the dogs by mosquitoes. Left untreated, it will block the chambers of the heart and lead to death.
We are all hopeful that the disease has not progressed too far and will be successfully treated. The first step being to evaluate Maddie and treat any issues of heart, liver or kidney insufficiency so that she would be able to withstand the treatment. The next step is to kill the adult worms with an arsenic compound.
The treatment for Maddie is being administered in two doses each day for two days. She will need several weeks of inactivity to give her system a chance to absorb the dead worms. Exertion could be deadly if the dead worms to dislodge and travel to the lungs.
In the next three-to-four weeks Maddie will undergo additional treatment to kill any of the remaining larvae left by the worms. Maddie will be dosed daily for a week, then undergo another blood test. If the larvae are still present, the doses will be increased. From that point, Maddie will need follow-up studies to be done in a year.
We are looking forward to a full recovery for Maddie!! She is much too precious for anything but... The cost of the treatment will be high, however, Second Chance will not let Maddie down. We are hoping that you find Maddie’s story compelling and that you will help us to meet her needs.
Donations can be made by using the Pal Pal button below, or by mailing your donation directly to Second Chance. We will let Maddie know how much we all care for her.
To adopt Maddie, please submit an adoption application.
