Second Chance is proud to launch Behind the Paw, a unique career preview program created for qualified job applicants who want to explore what it’s like to work in a mission-driven, community-focused animal welfare organization.
Whether you’re applying for a current opening or exploring the possibility of joining our team in the future, Behind the Paw gives you an up-close look at the lifesaving work happening every day inside our hospitals and shelter.
What Is Behind the Paw?
Behind the Paw is an immersive shadow opportunity that allows qualified applicants to spend time with our team and learn about the roles, responsibilities, and mission-driven work at Second Chance. Participants can choose:
- 3-Hour Micro Shadow
- Half-Day Rotation
- Full “Day in the Life” Immersion
You’ll observe veterinary care, shelter operations, community programs, and the compassionate teamwork that makes our mission possible.
This is a non-hands-on, observational program designed for applicant learning and workforce development.
Who’s Eligible?
This program is open to qualified applicants only who meet the minimum requirements for one of the following job tracks:
- Veterinary Assistant
- Veterinary Technician
- Veterinarian
- Animal Care / Shelter Care
- Reception / Client Services
- Development / Fundraising
Applicants must meet eligibility requirements for employment in their chosen field.
Are You a Student?
If you are currently enrolled in a veterinary, animal care, or related educational program, please apply to our Intern/Externship Program, which is designed specifically for students seeking academic credit or hands-on learning.
Behind the Paw is not the appropriate program for current students.
What You’ll Experience
During your shadow experience, you may observe:
- Outpatient appointments and patient flow
- Surgery preparation and procedures (as appropriate)
- Shelter care, enrichment, and adoption operations
- Client service interactions
- Development and mission-focused communications
- Community outreach programs, vaccine clinics, or special initiatives
You will meet staff from across the organization, learn how our Access to Care model works, and gain insight into the impact Second Chance has on pets and families throughout Massachusetts.
After Your Visit
If you are applying for a current opening: Your Behind the Paw experience may support the hiring and interview process.
If there is no current opening that fits your skills: You will be added to our Talent Priority List, and we will notify you as soon as a suitable opportunity becomes available
