Volunteer with us!

At Second Chance Animal Services, volunteers turn hope into second chances. Walk dogs, socialize cats, help with adoptions, fundraising events, create enrichment toys, support our pet food pantry, or represent us at community events. Whether you give a few hours or more, your time brings comfort, confidence, and love to the animals in our community.

Special events at Second Chance are fueled by volunteers. Join our Events Committee or volunteer for a single opportunity: Help solicit auction items, secure sponsors, prepare event materials or join us at the event. Your time and energy help turn great events into life-saving support for animals in need.

Volunteers play a vital role in our work. We offer a variety of opportunities where you can contribute based on your experience, interests, and skills.

Clerical: General copying, scanning or shredding.

Maintenance/Cleaning: Dog Kennels and Cat Cages are cleaned twice a day or more and occasionally need minor repairs.

Enrichment Toys: —

Odd Jobs: Anyone with building skills to assist us with interior improvements.

Transportation: We can always use more volunteers to help with the transportation of supplies and donations. We also need volunteers to help pick up and distribute pet food to our pet food pantry partners.

Content Creation: We welcome volunteer submissions for our blog, social media and newsletters. Share your volunteer experience, spotlight animals waiting for a home and more.

Junior Volunteers: Youths between ages 12-18 must be accompanied by a parent.

FREQUENTLY ASKED VOLUNTEER QUESTIONS:

HOW DO I BECOME A VOLUNTEER?

To become a Second Chance volunteer, start by completing our online volunteer application. Once we receive your application, we’ll review your interests and contact you about the next steps. Depending on the volunteer roles you’re interested in, you’ll either be invited to attend a volunteer orientation and training session at our Adoption Center in East Brookfield or connected directly with our Volunteer Coordinator to discuss available opportunities that match your interests and schedule.

HOW OLD DO I NEED TO BE IN ORDER TO VOLUNTEER??

Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to volunteer independently.

Youth ages 12 to 17 are welcome to participate in our Junior Volunteer Program when accompanied by a registered parent or legal guardian who is also volunteering. Both the youth and parent or guardian must complete the volunteer registration process.

WHAT CAN CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 12 DO TO HELP?

While children under 12 are not eligible to volunteer, there are still plenty of ways they can make a difference! Families can organize a pet supply drive to collect much-needed items for the animals in our care and, when dropping off donations with a parent or guardian, enjoy a tour of our Adoption Center. Children can also make homemade cat toys and dog toys to help keep our shelter pets happy and engaged.

WHAT OPPORTUNITIES ARE AVAILABLE FOR COURT-ORDERED COMMUNITY SERVICE?

Court-ordered community service opportunities are available at our Southbridge Community Engagement Center. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator for eligibility requirements, available assignments, and scheduling information.

WHAT ARE THE VOLUNTEER HOURS AT THE ADOPTION CENTER?

Saturday to Friday: 8 to 10AM

Saturday to Wednesday: 4 to 6PM

Thursday: 3 to 5PM

Friday: 3 to 4:30PM

Where can I volunteer to walk a dog?

Trained volunteers can walk dogs as part of an animal care shift at the or during adoption hours at our Adoption Center in East Brookfield.

For the safety of all you must be a registered and trained volunteer to walk a dog.

What is the time commitment for volunteering?

There is no time commitment for volunteering at Second Chance. We are happy to have your help whenever possible. If you will be volunteering with our pets at the Adoption Center, we do ask that you schedule your first official shift with one week after your training session if possible to reinforce our policies while they are fresh in your mind.
